INFOMMOB (Mobile Interaction)
4th quarter, 2023/2024, timeslot A, 7.5 ECTS
Some preliminary information related to questions that I often get before the course starts:
- Projects will be done in groups (you can basically select your team mates yourself; assignments of individual members might take place though in order to balance group sizes).
- You will get a group grade. Yet, students who work harder and do particularly well will be rewarded with higher grades and those who do less work may get lower ones.
- The purpose of the project is to show that you are able to put the theoretical knowledge from the lectures into practice. Within the given restrictions, you are able to pick your topic yourself.
- Because you can pick your topic yourself, there are no pre-requirements to participate in the course (e.g., no programming skills are required; you can program but do not necessarily have to). You can propose a topic and approach that fits your level of expertise and experience, and we will discuss it if it gets approved or if changes are necessary.

background material
The goal of the project is to do a research project that is related to the domain of mobile interaction. Because we have people from different programs in this course (mostly HCI and GMT plus some from others), you might have less or more background knowledge about interaction-related research. Thus, here some pointers that might be helpful.
For some basic knowledge about research in general, and research in Human-Computer Interaction in particular, I suggest that you watch the first three-and-a-half lectures of the course "Current Topic in Media Computing and Human-Computer Interaction" taught by J. Borchers at RWTH Aachen, which are available on YouTube. It is not mandatory to watch them (meaning, there will be no exam questions about them), but I highly recommend it, since it will be very helpful for your projects.
- Lecture 1: Research contribution types (part 1) (skip the first 38 minutes, since they are only about organizational things)
- Lecture 2: Research contribution types (part 2) (at around 62 minutes, there is also a part about "How to read a scientific paper", which will come in handy when reading the papers of the course and writing your own for your project)
- Lecture 3: Research approaches in HCI (part 1)
- Lecture 4: Research approaches in HCI (part 2) (only the first 38 minutes)
For people with no background in HCI research, I also suggest watching lectures 4 and 5 on "Experimental research" and lecture 6 on "Quantitative and qualitative analyses."
Note: it's an excellent course. Feel free to enjoy the other recordings as well.
